Fontana Golf Club, Oberwaltersdorf, Austria
Developed by prominent Canadian businessman, Frank Stronach, the Fontana Golf Club is a prestigious sports club and residential community created as the centrepiece of Magna International’s European headquarters.
The flat open site and high water table presented many design and construction challenges for the creation of a captivating and well-drained golf course. Over 1.5 million cubic meters of earth were excavated to create a spectacular 20 acre man-made lake, providing a dramatic setting for the classically styled clubhouse and homes, along with the finishing holes of the golf course. Earth hauled from the massive lake excavation was used to artfully sculpt undulating fairways, dramatic bunkers and intriguing green surfaces, to create a visually stunning and challenging golf course.
Fontana Golf Club hosted the European Tour’s Austrian Open from 2006 to 2010 and has been ranked as Austria’s Best Golf course since opening in 1997.
